Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Barolo and Barbaresco, has had a very uneven record in California. But if there's any California Nebbiolo worth beginning the exploration with, it has to be one from the Central Coast, and this very renowned and talented winemaker.

Domestic Nebbiolo is quite hard to make well; there is a reason we only have two producers! The Le Pip Nebbiolo, full of Bien Naciedo fruit at 1000 ft elevation, is quite the exception! Rich, powerful, and full of tannin (as the varietal is known for), this wine is full of wild cherry, currant, and rose hips. Plenty of structure and depth, with great focus and round tannins, the Pip is a hell of a wine. It is approachable now, but will reward a few more years in the cellar.

Nebbiolo is a fickle beast. Tannic. Aggressive in its youth. Expensive by nature. Yet so overwhelmingly beautiful. It is hard to grasp Nebbiolo sometimes and I think that is because there are so few examples that can be drinkable early and won’t kill your wine budget for the month. I’m always complaining that K&L never has any good, affordable Nebbiolo to sell. Certainly not an easy task but one that I’ve taken to heart. So I present to you the 2007 Clendenen “Le Pip” Nebbiolo. Requisite bottle time? Check. Affordability? How’s $23.99 sound? Drinkable tonight with any number of heartier Italian fares? 100% yes. If you are in the market for a Nebbiolo look no further. Violet, rose petal, black tea and a lovely bark/sandalwood quality combine on the nose. Pure varietal here. Add the tangy, fresh, energetic black fruit at its core and the subtle floral notes at its edges dovetail an Amaro/liquored herbal edge to the finish and you have the best sub $25 dollar Nebbiolo I’ve ever seen from California and one that easily rivals the Nebbiolo d’Alba and Langhe based wines from Italy.

NEBBIOLO! Oh how I love Nebbiolo!! As a sommelier of a steakhouse in my previous life, there's nothing better than pairing the king of all grapes (Nebbiolo) with the king of all steaks (two pound bone in ribeye). Tasting this wine makes me drool and hungry for a fatty ribeye. This bottle came about as close as I can expect from classic Barolo or Barbaresco: it was intense, highly powerful, with cherry (slightly sweeter than the typical Italian counterpart), white truffles and crushed rose petals. High tannin and acid as you would expect from the varietal--my mouth puckered up immediately! I think I will leave it off here, it's time for me to pick up a steak for dinner tonight!

A nose of sappy red fruit and rose, this Nebbiolo spills across the palate with mouth-coating richness. True to form, it finishes dry with that classic grippy Nebbiolo acid/tannin structure. An honest wine, and a great domestic Nebbiolo.

- Tar and roses are the two descriptors most associated with this red grape grown, almost solely, in Italy's Piedmont, where it has achieved fame under the guises of the incredibly and age-worthy wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Characterized by chewy tannins, high acidity, high-tone cherry and raspberry fruit and truffle aromas and flavors, Nebbiolo has rightfully earned its reputation. Sadly the late-ripening varietal is quite delicate and is prone to disease as well as damage by hail that frequently pelts the region. Outside of Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo is grown in the DOCs of Gattinara, Spanna and Ghemme. The Nebbiolos of the Nebbiolo d'Alba DOC in the southeastern part of Piedmont are generally lighter and more immediately approachable versions of the grape, aged for less time than Barolo and Barbaresco, which also makes them less expensive. Langhe Nebbiolos are generally made from declassified fruit from the aforementioned regions of Barolo, Barbaresco and Nebbiolo d'Alba.

- Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
