2012 Denner "Denner Vineyard" Paso Robles Viognier

SKU #1158724 93 points Antonio Galloni

The 2012 Viognier is a stunner. It's as simple as that. Aging in French oak shapes the wine beautifully, giving it soft contours and gorgeous texture, but at the same time, there is plenty of energy and vibrancy. This is a fairly restrained style of Viognier by Central Coast standards. Readers can look forward to at least several years of exceptional drinking and pure pleasure. Anthony Yount is without question one of the most thoughtful and introspective winemakers in Paso Robles. Young is among those trying to add dimensions of finesse to his wines, and he is succeeding big time. This is a fabulous set of 2011s, but it’s just the start for a winemaker who has a brilliant career ahead of him. Denner is one of the elite estates in Paso Robles. I can't recommend these wines highly enough. (7/ 2013)

(raised in 320-liter French oak cigares, 20% of them new): Brilliant yellow. High-pitched aromas of candied citrus fruits, fresh flowers and toasty lees. Fleshy but energetic, offing intense lemon, tangerine and poached pear flavors and suggestions of sweet butter and chamomile. Picks up a gingery nuance with air and finishes with outstanding clarity, power and length. This is one of the best viogniers I've had from outside of Condrieu in a long time -- in fact, it's up there with some of the best Condrieus I've had recently. (12/ 2013)

A rich, textured yet also pure white, Denner’s 2012 Viognier offers up solid stone fruits, hints of flowers and juicy peach to go with a medium-bodied, mouth-filling profile on the palate. Finishing with clean acidity and beautiful focus, it’s an outstanding Viognier that has both richness and freshness. Enjoy it over the coming year or three. Drink now-2016. This was a beautiful lineup of wines by winemaker Anthony Yount and I continue to be impressed with the wines of this estate. Located on the western edge of Paso Robles, the wines possess individual, unique characters that show not only Paso fruit, but balance and restraint. They’re highly recommended. (8/ 2013)

Aside from the delicious wines, great facility, beautiful winery and vineyard and all that, what Denner really impressed me with on our latest trip there is their winemaker Anthony Yount. He is young, driven, excited and just passionate about winemaking. If we didn't have other appointments to go to, I think he would have had us taste every barrel he had in the warehouse! Their 2012 Viognier is yet another pleasant surprise for me. Not overly floral or fruity, it's in balance with the leesy earthy tones; refreshing on the palate with a hint of bitterness (very typical of Viognier) on the finish.

Lovers of rich and opulent Viognier need look no further! Notes of white flowers and citrus dominate the nose. Texturally this wine delivers a lush mid-palate of ripe summer orchard fruit which carries through the finish.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Viognier

- Relatively challenging to cultivate, this white grape's plantings were long limited to two appellations in the Northern Rhône - Condrieu, the better known of the two, and Château-Grillet - but its recent gains in popularity inspired plantings in the Languedoc-Roussillon, across California, as well as in parts of Australia, Italy, Spain and South America. Intensely aromatic and full-bodied, Viognier is prized for its aromas and flavors of stone fruits, d'Anjou pears and white flowers. In fact, its heady perfume wins it the honor of being a rare white varietal used in one of the world's top reds - Côte-Rôtie - where it is often planted amid the Syrah and co-fermented with that grape. The combination deepens the color of Côte-Rôtie and adds to its already deep and distinctive nose.
Country:

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Specific Appellation:

Paso Robles

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
