2001 Arnauld, Haut-Médoc
Chateau Arnauld is located between Margaux and Moulis, on a large gravel outcropping on the edge of the Gironde, neighboring Chasse Spleen and Poujeaux. The oceanic breezes off the Gironde estuary keep vines cool, promoting long, even ripening for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted to these mineral-rich, high-draining soils. The blend is typically about half Cabernet and half Merlot, often with a bit more Cabernet. The wines are made in a traditional style made to withstand the cellar: black-fruited with spicy complexity from barrel, a rich midpalate, and fine tannin structure balanced by natural acidity. To quote Jancis Robinson, "Having tasted a wide range of 2001 bordeaux now that they have reached the magic age of 10 years, many of them in a single tasting very recently...the red wines have benefited from so many years in bottle, they look considerably more charming than they did at just a few months old. In fact those who bought 2001 red bordeaux en primeur should feel quite pleased with themselves." (04/2011) This 2001 is in its optimum drinking window and will drink beautifully alongside 'entrecôte' (or New York strip) with a mushroom Bordelaise sauce.
