2013 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival)
Barrel Sample. This wine is very true to the vintage. It has an attractive fragrance and great fruit purity, along with touches of wood and black currant. It is a fine wine, while showing the lightness of the year.
An aromatic wine with a delicacy and suppleness that is exceptional for the vintage with blackberry, mineral, spice and flower character. Very fine tannins. Seamless structure. It’s a wine that makes you want to drink it with its pleasant savory, fruity character. Harmonious.
A lovely, aromatic expression of fresh plum, just-warmed cherry confiture and violet, giving way to a very supple, gentle feel as the silky tannins let the red and blue fruits glide through. Quite pretty and stylish, and a 180-degree turn from the 2011 in style. Very light, pure and balanced. A true display of the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Tasted non-blind.
(listed in "most impressive" of 2013, 18/20 points; drink 2018-28; RH)
The first major Bordeaux property to open their 2013 price. Always one of the best wines in Bordeaux. Only 50% production this year so the wine is quite limited in availability, and it's about one third the price of the 2009. Barrel Tasting: Exotic aromas of Asian spice and red fruits. Quite delicious and one of better wines tasted so far. Mid-term ager with round, ripe tannins. A blend of 30% Merlot, 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
