Hermanuspietersfontein's "Nr3: Bergblokke" or "mountain block" tends to produce pure, concentrated, fruit-driven wines presenting fine citrus, gooseberry, kiwi, litchi and melon aromas and flavors. A dash of neutral barrel fermented Semillon is added to balance the Sauv Blanc's overt nature and enhance palate texture. This is a super refreshing wine with lots of juicy fruit and zesty acidity. It's also an outstanding vintage from a true master of Sauvignon Blanc winemaker Bartho Eksteen. Bartho is known in South Africa as: "the Sultan of Savvy"..."The Sage of Sauvignon Blanc"...and even "Monsieur SB"! The best value for money white wine in the store! Fantastic Savvy with perfect balance and multiple layers of complexity. Fresh, juicy, bright, brimming with fruit and minerality. Easy to drink party wine but with tons of depth and persistence if you want something a bit more engaging. Winemaker Bartho Eksteen is truly a master of this varietal and our direct import means the price is ridiculously low. Please don't be put off by how inexpensive this wine is--it's the real deal. From steep mountainside vineyards and blended with a touch of Sémillon to give texture and power. I don't know another bottle of wine that gives so much interest for such little cash.

If you can pronounced the name of this wonderful SB, we might sell you a bottle or two or twelve. Unlike those coming from New Zealand with gobs of grapefruit and lemon tones, this South African Gem offers a lovely melon-like to clove-like presentation in the nose and on its dry, clean, crisp, well-structured, yet mouthwatering presentation and finish. The Bean has told me that we need cases of this Gem and that if you bypass this beauty, you might as well stop drinking wine. A non-linear, completely satisfying SB that will rival many of the wonderful SB wines coming from Sancerre and Graves, and at a super low price. 13.5% abv.

I was really surprised by the elegance and flavor integration of this wine. I like Sauvignon Blanc but I don't like the overtly grassy versions or the exceedingly neutral, pseudo-Chardonnay styles either. This wine (once you get past the name) has energy, with fresh, almost citrusy flavor showing a brighter more focused wine. I love this style of wine with richer seafood or a grilled calamari, or with a runny poached egg over grilled asparagus. This isn't the first place you'd probably look for Sauvignon but it will be on your list after you have this wine.

The #3 Sauvignon Blanc is their version of a more tropical style Sauv Blanc. It’s quite aromatic with white flower, kiwi and grapefruit and tropical flavors on the palate like passion fruit, honeydew and lemon zest. A very bright, flavor intensive Sauv Blanc with lovely acidity, perfect for those hot summer days.

OK, folks, this is a crazy good deal. A splash of barrel-fermented Semillon adds complexity and a nice fig note to the mid-palate. But the overwhelming impression is of pure, focused Sauvignon Blanc with the minerality you expect from mountain fruit. It is a crazy world, where this wine can travel half-way around the world and make it to our shelves, still at such a value price!

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines.
