2012 Viña Cobos "Felino" Merlot Mendoza

SKU #1157458 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Good bright, full red. Expressive aromas of black cherry, blackberry, bitter chocolate and licorice, with a musky animal nuance and good lift from herbs and spices. Juicy and nicely delineated, displaying good depth and energy to the flavors of blackberry, black cherry, cassis, spices and herbs. Lively merlot with smooth tannins, a lingering hint of herbs and noteworthy intensity for its price point. Very satisfying now. (4/ 2014)

Wine Spectator

Fleshy, with bright acidity backing the juicy plum and racy cherry notes. Hints of toasty oak and flint mark the finish. (Web Only-2013)

K&L Notes

A very convincing Merlot, Paul Hobbs' "Felino" shows pleasant, plummy and red fruit aromas, which lead to a tasty, juicy palate of mixed berry fruit. Drinkable and very nicely balanced Merlot, a fine alternative to any of your pricier Napa favorites! (Joe Manekin, K&L South American Wine Buyer)

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Merlot

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Country:

Argentina

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
