2008 Americo Nunes Seabra "Americo" Dão

SKU #1156980 90 points Wine Spectator

This sinewy red delivers well-spiced, concentrated flavors of cherry, plum and wild berry. Notes of iron and dark chocolate mark the savory finish, with hints of white pepper. Drink now through 2015. (10/ 2012)

K&L Notes

Bright mixed berry and plum aromas lead to a tasty palate. No, make that bright, lively and scrumptiously tasty palate. Smashed berries combined with lovely minerality, reminding one of the heavily granitic soils in the Dao, and granite’s ability to impart great freshness in wine. While the tannins grip slightly toward the finish, this adds to the overall tension and appealingly firm structure. Great value for the money in this red, particularly for fans of acidity, minerality, subtlety and balance in their red wines. Touriga Nacional.

Have you had Portuguese wine recently? Though it shares the Iberian peninsula with Spain, whose wines we feature regularly, somehow Portugal unfairly does not garner as much press or respect. We want to change that. Here we have a delicious, balanced (13% ABV) and notable value from the Dao, across the mountains from the Douro and port country. Not only is it a great under $10 value, there is nothing from Spain (or elsewhere) that is at all similar to this unique red.

Portugal

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
