2013 Bodegas Colomé Torrontes Valle Calchaquí Salta

SKU #1155303 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Very pale bright yellow. Pure, delicate, high-pitched perfume of rose petal and dusty brown spices. Brisk, tactile and quite dry but with an essentially supple texture--even a slightly glyceral character--to the flavors of grapefruit pith, lemon, flowers, spices and salty minerality. This serious yet seductive example of Torrontes finishes with sneaky dusty persistence. (3/ 2014)

K&L Notes

Produced from biodynamically farmed Torrontes, this wine is produced from some of the highest elevation vines in production anywhere in the world, at more than 7,000 feet above sea level! Very floral aromas with juicy yellow plums and white peaches leads to a lovely, slightly spicy and floral, yet refreshing palate. Another great effort from one of our favorite Argentine wineries.

I don't think it gets more textbook for Torrontes than the always delicious version from Colomé. The country's best, most wonderfully fragrant, balanced and nervy Torrontes tends to come from Salta, where Colomé has been an innovator not only in the quality of its Torrontes but also its Malbecs. This wine has juicy yellow fruited flavors, with exotic aromas that suggest jasmine. A unique white to sip as an aperitif or to accompany seafood and vegetable dishes.

Steely, refreshing, concentrated, with an emphasis on sun ripened apricots.

Argentina

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
