 A spectacular wine made by the owners of nearby and better-known Chateau Chasse-Spleen, this is a seriously endowed, dense, full-bodied wine made from an equal part blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Oodles of black fruits, licorice, truffle and new saddle leather are present as well as some toasty oak. Full-bodied, deep, pure and exceptionally long in the mouth, this is a major overachiever that should drink nicely for 10-15+ years. (RP)  (2/ 2013)

 This vineyard, on a gravel rise over clay and limestone, is the original part of the 18th-century Gressier estate, from which Chasse-Spleen split off in 1840. This stony croupe produced a clean, refreshing 50-50 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot in 2010. With the cool finesse of the vintage in its sweet fruit and velvet tannins, it’s a gentle Bordeaux to enjoy with lamb chops.  (10/ 2013)

Dark garnet color. Nice aromatic nose full of blackberries, cocoa and cassis. The palate follows the nose with sweet dark fruit, coffee, and a touch of pepper. Medium tannins and a very soft finish. Accessible now, but it will age beautifully. I did not decant it, and it was delicious from the get go.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
