2012 Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland

SKU #1153640 90 points Wine & Spirits

As always, Roland Velich’s basic Blaufränkisch is a seductive pleasure. It starts with the scent, purple and pretty in its floral overtones; then in the texture it feels full, supple and lifted. What sends it home is the purity of the flavors, a wash of purple fruit that recalls a Rothko in its depth and vibrant saturation. (4/ 2014)

K&L Notes

So, you're thinking about getting into Blaufränkisch? When exploring an "alternative" varietal like this, albeit a major red wine of Austria for centuries, we highly recommend starting with a top producer like Moric. Writing about a previous vintage, wine writer Jamie Goode called it, "A serious Austrian red: Moric Blaufrankisch." New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov also had praise: "The Blaufränkisch grape is grown mostly in Austria, where it makes a spicy red wine that can be graceful yet intense, complex yet tangy and refreshing. My favorite Blaufränkisch producer, Moric, is a star in this world and fetches prices beyond many of these wines." (9/13/2011)

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure. Click for a list of bestselling items from Austria.
