Caol Ila "Stitchell Reserve" Unpeated Islay Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml

SKU #1150207 Whisky Advocate

Caol Ila in unpeated guise. There’s no age statement, but what you get is a mix of the fresh and the mature: a vibrant attack with fresh Victoria plum, grapes, and a hint of oiliness. Give it time and the sensation is like afternoon tea at your auntie’s, with thickly-buttered scones dripping with honey or pineapple jam. The palate is equally sweet and gentle, and only needs a little drop of water to reveal light spice. A wee beauty. (DB) (3/ 2014)

K&L Notes

Bottled at 59.6% cask strength, this unpeated, smoke-free, 2013 rare edition of the Stitchel Reserve is one of the most anticipated releases of the year for Caol Ila fans. Known for it's rounder, fruit-forward style, Caol Ila is always a wonderful balance of supple texture with potent peat. Aged in refill Bourbon and Diageo's own special recoopered Sherry butts, this is a lighter, grainier style of whisky that packs quite a punch. Water is an absolute must. At full proof, the alcohol overpowers the delicacy underneath. A few drops help to reveal the sweet barley notes and saltier elements locked away under the usual dosage of smoke. For whisky geeks, it doesn't get any more fun that tasting an unpeated version of a classically smoky whisky.

Islay in a bottle minus the smokey flavors. I wrote in my notes that this Caol Ila smells like an island malt with hints of the sea and bright fresh air. It is complex and quite concentrated. Very good.
