2009 Château Thénac Bergerac Rouge (Previously $20)

SKU #1149153 90 points Wine Enthusiast

*Editors' Choice* Big, bold and black in color, this wine is full of new wood perfumes, and it has a smooth, polished texture. Rich, fruity and firmly balanced, it has dark tannins that create a powerful structure. It offers some aging potential. (3/ 2013)

K&L Notes

A Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend from the Côtes de Bergerac in Southwestern France's Perigord region, grown in limestone soils. "The 2009 has sweet aromas of blueberries, ripe figs, toasted almond and nutmeg. Opulent, fruity and harmonious on the palate, it has a long finish with finely integrated tannins," according to the winery. A fantastic near-term ager that's wonderfully affordable, too, a must if you've got some truffles on hand since this delicious red comes from the famed home of the world's famous black truffles. 14.5% abv.

During my 45 visits to southwestern France I have tasted hundreds of Bergerac reds and this is by far the best I have ever tasted. It's a big dark wine with lots of powerful fruit but without the rough and rustic tannins this area is known for. This wine is made by one of the great winemakers in Bordeaux Denis Durantou the owner of Ch. Eglise Clinet in Pomerol. Ralph Sands

This Bordeaux wannabe has a warm, rich entry of sweet, roasted dark fruits and a nice hint of earth. This is plush, gentle and somewhat modern in style although plenty of fine, ripe tannin on the finish holds everything in check. This inviting wine is perfect for decanting tonight.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Merlot

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
