2011 Green & Red "Chiles Canyon Vineyard" Napa Valley Zinfandel

Green & Red has long been one of our favorite under-the-radar producers in California, but word seems to be spreading--the 2009 vintage of this sustainably-farmed Zinfandel was named *Year's Best Zinfandel* by Wine & Spirits Magazine in 2012. The property is situated on the steep hills flanking Chiles Valley east of Napa, where red iron soils are striped with green serpentine, on a site originally planted to vineyards in the 1890s. Their "Chiles Canyon" Zin blends fruit from their three mountain estate vineyards, each of which sit at different elevations (ranging from 1,000 to 1,700 feet) with different exposures. Aged in French and American oak for fourteen months, the combination yields a wine with zesty mountain fruit character accented by earth spice and savory herb notes that consistently over-delivers in quality for the price. With dark cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors punctuated by tinges of bay leaf and clove, the delicious 2011 is recommended with wood-grilled steak and veggies.

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
