2011 Luce Della Vite "Lucente" Toscana (Elsewhere $27)

SKU #1148453 93 points James Suckling

The aromas in this young red show wild, dark fruits of blueberries plus mushroom and fresh herbs. Full body, chewy tannins and loads of plummy character. Second wine of Luce. Always delicious. Drink or hold. (9/ 2013)

K&L Notes

75% Merlot and 25% Sangiovese. This is the second wine of Luce Della Vite, an estate in Montalcino. The Merlot-dominated Lucente entices with red fruit aromas--raspberries and cherries--accented by violets and herbs de Provence. The palate has rich coffee, purple fruit and nutty tones framed by fine tannins and nice balance.

This is one of my favorite producers from Tuscany. This is their "Super Tuscan" - a very user friendly wine, the blend is 75%Merlot and 25% Sangiovese. Lots of dark skinned fruit with spice, minerals that complete each other on the nose and palate. The wine has pleasantly soft tannins, but good acidity to pull it all together.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Merlot

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
