2011 Jacques Bavard Monthelie Blanc

This extremely elegant wine comes from the border with Meursault and tastes like it. It is made by a tiny negociant in Puligny-Montrachet, called Jacques Bavard. He comes from a long line of wine-growers, and is dedicated to working with organic and biodynamic growers. I found him thanks to a tip from a friend in Chassagne-Montrachet and was most impressed with the purity of his wines. Available at a very modest price, thanks to our direct import. It is round and rich with terrific length and presence, showing a bit of pear and a touch of toasty oak. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

While I have huge respect for the many talented, multi-generational domaines working in historic terroirs, producing excellent wine year after year, it is interesting to me how an outsider, or at least one not long involved on the production side of the business, can make excellent wines due to their palate preferences, context for wine tasting, work ethic, and savoir faire. Bavard is a perfect example. The Monthelie borders Meursault, which, given the savory, nutty yellow fruited profile, comes as no surprise. As per usual with Bavard, this shows wonderfully balance and texture.

Chardonnay

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Côte d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Côte de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Côte de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds).
