K&L Notes

One of the most serious English Sparkling producers. This historic estate has been in the Goring family since 1743. The tiny 16-acre vineyard is close-planted on a steep south-facing chalk escarpment described as 'similar to the Côte des Blancs' in Champagne. The wines are made by Dermot Sugrue, a talented winemaker who has worked at L'Eglise-Clinet and Leoville-Barton in Bordeaux, as well as Moet & Chandon and Nye Timber (one of England's largest sparkling producers). The fruit is hand-picked very selectively with quality being the absolute focus. The grapes are pressed gently using a traditional Coquard press. After 2 1/2 years on the lees this wine, composed of 57% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier, shows pure alpine strawberries and a stunning, creamy texture. Finishes with hints of crushed raspberries, warm brioche and vibrant minerality drawing the wine out immeasurably long on the palate. Pure delight! This dry crisp brut rose is balanced with an appropriately low 8g/l dosage. After hearing so much buzz about English Sparkling wines in the last few years we had to see what all the fuss was about. After compiling a list of a dozen top growers from the now several hundred estates, we strictly narrowed down the wines to the best of the best; Wines we thought offered world class quality and an authentic representation of what England can offer. We have done a very small introductory import of these wines to give you the chance to check them out.

Hmmm. I've read about wines from England for a bit now, but I never really believed they existed, and certainly not ones of any quality. Ryan has opened my eyes, for even just a peek, to the potential of the sparkling wines of England.

Another standout wine from Wiston Estate. This magnificent rose is all about purity and elegance. A fresh nose of rose petals and spice with hints of Strawberry carries through on to the wonderfully soft, fine textured palate with Alpine Strawberries and fresh cream on brioche. A perfect expression of Rose for me. Lovely focus and precision with a softness and elegance that is very hard to achieve. Top notch stuff. 8g/l dosage. If it matters to you, (and sometimes with “Champagne” it does) these guys also got the packaging right, a very stylish and eye catching bottle, enough to land them on the Forbes' list for coolest wine labels of 2013!

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.
