 The 2012 Riesling gives notes of freshly squeezed limes, honeysuckle and frangipani with nuances of lemon pastilles and wet slate. Dry, light-bodied and very crisp in the mouth, it offers a wonderful burst of citrus fruit flavor and a long, steely finish. This is one for the acid freaks! Drink it 2014 to 2020+.  (8/ 2013)

Laser focused and intense Riesling from an old hillside block of vines in Mt. Barker. The Langton vineyard was planted back in the early 1970s and produces fruit of stunning depth, concentration of flavor and minerality. The wine has tightly coiled power and needs a few swirls in the glass (and your mouth) to release its fantastic cascade of flavors. The whole citrus spectrum, green apple, feijoa, river stone, ground quartz even...? Unbelievable persistence and linear intensity on the palate. Formidable acidity means this one will only get better, I wouldn't be surprised if this hits its stride five years from now and canters on into its twenties! World class dry Riesling.

Super racy, mineral-infused dry Riesling. Linear, focused and super zesty. Lovely bright acidity, real depth of flavor from the old vines. Amazing wine for shellfish. Will age for a decade plus.

- While the rest of the world has often misappropriated the name--Welchriesling, Riesling Italico, Gray Riesling and Emerald Riesling are all names applied to varieties that are NOT Riesling--this exceptional German varietal has managed to maintain its identity. Perhaps its biggest claims to fame are its intoxicating perfume, often described as having honeyed stone fruit, herb, apple and citrus notes, and its incredible longevity - the wines lasting for decades. Aged Rieslings often take on a distinctive and alluring Petrol-like aroma. Within Germany, the grape seems to do best in the warming slate soils of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Other German regions that turn out great Rieslings include Pfalz, Rheingau and Nahe. German Rieslings are made in a range of ripeness levels. The top wines are assigned Prädikat levels to describe their ripeness at harvest. These are: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling has also achieved acclaim in France's Alsace, the only region in that country where the grape is officially permitted. Alsatian Rieslings are typically dry and wonderfully aromatic. Austrian Riesling is also steadily gaining praise and fine Riesling is also produced in Italy's Alto-Adige and Friuli, in Slovenia and much of Central and Eastern Europe. In the New World its stronghold is Australia, where it does best in the Eden and Clare Valleys. It is also planted in smaller amounts in New Zealand. In the US, winemakers are eschewing the syrupy sweet versions of the 1970s and 1980s, instead making elegant and balanced wines in both California and Washington State.


- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great Region are in the southeastern area of the continent, with the Barossa Valley, Claire Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia, the Yarra Yarra Velley and Pyrenees in Victoria and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling from the land Down Under. While many equate Aussie wines with "value", there are more than a few extremely rare and pricey options, which never fail to earn the highest ratings from wine publications and critics throughout the world.
