2011 Algueira Merenzao Ribeira Sacra (Previously $40)
It has a very closed nose giving some brine-like flavours, however it opens up superbly after few minutes and a proper decantation, it combines stony notes and wild red fruits. It has a thin and slim palate, it is so delicate that almost tastes as if it was a white wine, with a lively acidity, really easy drinking and deep. If you are a top Gamay lover this is a bottle that you will love to drink. 17/20 points.
Just when we were all getting used to the fact that Ribeira Sacra is mostly about Mencía grapes (which it is) Algueira throws this rarity our way, from the Merenzao grape variety, a grape known as Bastardo in the Douro, where it contributes aromatics and freshness to those wines. You can see why, as this 100% Merenzao is very bright on the nose, with fresh mulberries as well as ground black peppercorns and palpable minerality. On the palate the wine is so fresh, all mixed berries, with a remarkable grace and a light-on-its-feet quality to it. Lovely red wine, the kind that can be paired with a wide range of dishes or simply be drunk with light snacks after a day's work. Delicious, spirit-warming wine!
