2012 Skouras "Zoe" White Peloponnese

SKU #1145053 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2012 Zoe White is a 60/40 Roditis-Moschofilero blend (spelled Moscofilero on the back label, as transliterations change frequently here). It a nice and consistent value point in the usually well priced Skouras lineup, straightforward, but quite charming and sometimes an overachiever--like this year. In its first blush of youth, it shows good solidity for this level (relative to these grapes, of course) and nice persistence. Aromatic, pure and friendly, it is also fruity and flavorful. It is well balanced, but with some notable crispness on the back end to give it an invigorating quality. I appreciated its ability to come into balance, become more transparent and show some finesse as it aired out. Mostly, it just tasted great, making it a perfect picnic wine or porch sipper, while maintaining its refreshing demeanor. Stock up, but buy what you plan to drink now. This summer will be its peak in all likelihood, but it may drink well next year, too. Wines like this do not always last long at peak. After that, if you’ve planned correctly and are drinking fast enough, you shouldn’t have any left anyway. Drink now-2014. (MS) (4/ 2013)

Wine & Spirits

Light and floral, this marries roditis and moschofilero for a citrusy summer drink. Green herbal notes and salty minerality lend it unexpected sophistication at the price; it wouldn’t be out of place at a sushi bar. (8/ 2013)

Wine Spectator

This is filled with floral notes, with crisp acidity to the white cherry, melon and gooseberry flavors. Orange peel accents grace the finish. Drink now. (9/ 2013)

Greece

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
