2011 Argyros Estate Assyrtiko Santorini

SKU #1144868 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2011 Assyrtiko seemed impressive when I first saw it on release. The wineryís closure change for this bottling (to a screw cap) may scare some off, but donít worry about it. This has opened beautifully -- more evidence of how well-made Assyrtiko develops. Much more expressive now, it has tasty and juicy fruit, reasonably good concentration for its level and nice grip on the finish. It is impossible to resist, a beautifully balanced and elegant Assyrtiko that nonetheless demonstrates persistence to go along with its finesse. It is not a brooding, massively concentrated wine, to be sure. It wonít initially make you go 'wow.' It is delicious and utterly charming, though. It is hard to keep your hands off of it. It should drink beautifully over the next few years. It may well last longer, but letís see where we are when we get there. Drink now-2018. (10/ 2013)

Wine & Spirits

Bold and direct, this is a cool, clear reflection of the vintage, the chalky flavors lit by a bright note of lemon zest. Sharp and pithy, it would be delicious with a pile of little fried fish. (8/ 2012)

Greece

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
