2012 Kloof Street (Mullineux Family Wines) Red Rhône Blend Swartland South Africa

SKU #1144347 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2012 Kloof Street Rouge is a blend of 83% Syrah, 13% Cinsault and 4% Carignan with 10% whole bunch. Minimal sulphur is used before the wine is raised in used French barriques for 11 months. It has a light, well-defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry leaf and a touch of cold black tea that is nicely defined, though it would benefit from more vigor. The palate is well-balanced with creamy red berry fruit on the entry. The acidity is nicely judged and it gently builds to a fresh strawberry, orange zest and white pepper finish that linger nicely, but not too long, in the mouth. This is a very fine Kloof Street – probably better than previous vintages. Drink now-2015. (10/ 2013)

K&L Notes

Kloof Street is an offshoot of Mullineaux Family Wines, which Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate says: "Mullineux epitomize elegant, terroir-driven, traditionally tailored wines that deliver nuanced scents and flavors while rarely treading over 13.5% alcohol. They do not shortchange wine-lovers on flavor, yet at the heart of their best blends there is an intellectual aspect that leaves you wanting more. If you have not discovered Mullineux yet what are you waiting for?"

A stunningly perfumed, elegant Rhone blend. Lots of crushed bramble fruits, Raspberry coulis and loganberry balanced with more savory toasted spice and gravelly minerality. This wine is made from fruit hand-picked form old, dry farmed, bush vines in Swartland on South Africa's west coast. Very minimal intervention winemaking from Chris and Andrea Mullineux skilfully preserved this wines natural vibrancy and sense of place.

South Africa

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Click for a list of bestselling items from South Africa.
