2010 Martin Ray "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $25)
Wine & Spirits
Bright and spicy with scents of black olives and beefy tomatoes, this is burly and round. A black-fruited wine to serve with steak Florentine.
This manages to combine instant drinkability with Napa complexity, resulting in a really nice wine. Although it's not an ager, it rises to the occasion with sweetly ripe raspberries, cherries and blackberries, plush, polished tannins and a lovely coating of smoky oak.
Name game: Martin Ray is made in the old Martini & Prati winery by brandmeister Courtney Benham, founder of Blackstone Winery. His collection of Napa Valley wines, which include Stag's Leap District, Oak Knoll, and Howell Mountain appellations as well as the Napa Valley "Reserve," are fine values, making this label something of a special discovery.
