2011 Domaine Calendal "Plan de Dieu" Côtes du Rhône-Villages
Sleek, featuring pure black cherry and black currant fruit, with a lovely graphite frame and a lingering black tea note on the perfumy finish. Drink now through 2014.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The personal project of oenologists Philippe Cambie and Gilles Ferran, the 2011 Calendal will not make anyone forget the brilliant 2009 and 2010, but this equal part blend of Mourvedre and Grenache aged 12 months in older barrels comes from the famous Plan de Dieu, essentially a vast ocean of vines (mostly Grenache) situated between Rasteau and Courthezon. Lovely, soft berry fruit intermixed with lavender and other Provencal herbs, damp earth and spicy pepper notes give way to a medium-bodied, soft, complex, easygoing red to drink over the next 2-3 years.
