2012 Niepoort "Docil" Loureiro Vinho Verde (Elsewhere $15)

SKU #1140986 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A knock-out, non-malolactic wine made from the Portuguese indigenous varietal Loureiro, the 2012 Docil Branco Vinho Verde is a terrific example of a dry white. Moreover, it demonstrates the potential for such wines when made by conscientious producers in Portugal (the Niepoort family has been making wines - primarily Port - since 1842). This consumer-friendly white offers abundant notes of green-apple skins, grapefruit, citrus and hints of wet rocks and spring flowers. Fresh, medium-bodied and bursting with fruit, purity, texture and appeal, this beauty stands out as one of the finest Vinho Verdes I have ever tasted. Enjoy it over the next year. (RP) (8/ 2013)

K&L Notes

Niepoort has been an independent family owned and operated wine business since its inception in 1842. Most famous for their Port and Douro wines, they expanded their collective to include wine projects in areas as diverse as Spain and South Africa as well as other parts of Portugal. Hence the "Docil" project - a pure expression of the Vinho Verde wine region all from a single varietal - Loureiro. Not your typical frothy light-bodied style, the Docil is a richer more intense expression of the region with lime blossom, Anjou pear aromas and flavors of Meyer lemon and crushed rock on the palate. Highly expressive and really intriguing. Perfect quaffer going into spring and will drink great all through the summer.

Bright and refreshing, with great acidity, grapefruit pith, and lingering minerality.

I'm very excited for this newest addition to our Vinho Verde family! In LA, where we have Vinho Verde weather all year round, it couldn't have come any sooner. Unlike your typical VV, this one is more vinous on the palate, with less crazy spritz and more of a elegant zing or fizz if you will. This is mouthwateringly refreshing with zippy acidity and wonderful texture. I'm getting a case before it disapears!!!

Bright, clean and snappy on the palate. This is a more amped up version of your standard Vinho Verde. Notes of meyer lemon, mandarin orange and crunch minerality, it has just a touch of CO2 for a nice zippy finish. One of the best versions of its kind and at an exceptionally low price!

This is spectacular everyday white wine! If Quinta da Aveleda is a great introduction and ol' reliable bottling of vinho verde, consider the Niepoort "Docil" as another, more subtle, more serious take on the style, but every bit as gulpable (maybe even a bit more?) 100% Loureiro grapes, softly textured, all crisp tart apples and citric flavors, and as I mentioned earlier, so very drinkable. Dirk Niepoort continues to be one of the most versatile winemakers around, and I love that he still thinks it important to make great, affordable white wine!

Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region.
