Lock Stock & Barrel 13 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey 750ml (one bottle limit)

SKU #1140488 91 points Whisky Advocate

Beautifully boxed for gift giving, a quality that carries over into the whiskey itself. Fresh-cut red cedar unfolds into hard candy, green apples, nail polish, rye bread, and ripe black cherries on the nose. Vague cedar on the palate becomes fruity and floral, then hot and spicy. Distant licorice root is restrained by German rye bread. Earthy but not dusty, with a sweet, hot, effervescent spiciness. Fades in a long, tingling finish. Complex and expressive: rich yet ethereal. K&L Notes

This is the first older straight rye coming out of PA in many years. The source is almost certainly to be Canada which puts it in Whistlepig, Masterson's category, but these stocks seem to be pretty different in style. It was bottled in PA by an old distillery known to specialize in the production of cordials. We may not know the exact distillery where this whisky was made, but we know that this is a unique expression of rye. Perhaps these are old stocks from their old Rock & Rye or maybe it's freshly acquired from one of the mutliple sources for Canadian Whisky. It's unusual to see rye at this age, very few barrels make it that long. Of course, stocks are very low and will be parceled out in very limited releases.

A fine product, with a good blend of flavor. There isn't much Rye out there in the $100 and up range, but this one has earned its place on the roster.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
