 An outstanding example of a 100% Chenin Blanc from the small yet compact appellation of Savennieres, these wines can age well, but there is no reason to defer your gratification. Medium-bodied with a wonderful flowery, melony character as well as hints of honeysuckle and beeswax, this fragrant 2010 Savennieres possesses crisp acidity, penetrating flavors, and a dry, heady, mineral-laced finish. K&L Notes

Viticulture and winemaking are done in a classical style at Domaine Laffourcade. The Chenin Blancs of Savennières are exclusively made in a dry style, and this example is a reliable winner for its expression and value. Vines averaging 20 years old are planted in sandy schist soils where they are harvested manually to modest yields. The juice is slowly fermented to preserve fresh aromatics and the wine is aged in-tank on the lees before bottling.

I cannot believe a wine this complex can be had for just $20! I guess it serves us fans of Chenin well that the AOC of Savennieres still flies under the general public's radar. A touch nutty, with bruised apple, lanolin, quince, honeycomb and mushroom on the nose. Softly fruity, almondy and savory on the palate, this finishes dry. Serve this with something fatty. Or with a cheese plate.

Chenin Blanc

- Also called Pineau de la Loire and Pineau d'Anjou. Chenin Blanc is an expressive white French varietal that makes beautiful dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Traditionally grown in the Loire Valley, the wines made from this varietal are typically labeled geographically.
