2010 Quinta de Arcoso "Padrao dos Povos" Tras-os-Montes

SKU #1138800

Tras-os-Montes is one of Portugal's most interesting regions for red wine production, a place that is nestled in the northeastern corner of Portugal, land-locked and with a rather extreme continental climate with very warm summers and extremely cold winters. It is still little known outside of the country but is a region that has excellent, hilly granite terroirs. This example is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Touriga Franca. Intense red fruited aromas also show hints of sappy wild herbs, and a richness that is bordering on confit but is somehow more delicate. Red fruits persist on the very mineral-driven, medium-bodied palate. An interesting, well balanced and fun new arrival to our shelves! (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese Wine Buyer)

We field more and more inquiries every day about the availability of red wines from Portugal. These can be tough to find. If you do find one, it is more likely to be international in style and with no true distinctiveness. From the rugged, isolated hill country in the extreme northeast of Portugal, the 2010 Quinta de Arcoso "Padrao dos Povos" is the real deal. Foot-trodden and tank-aged using traditional methods, this blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Touriga Franca is medium bodied with bright red fruits and a lively minerality that reflects the largely granitic character of the region's (admittedly poor) soils. Superb regional character and typicity for a mere $15.99.

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
