Telegraph Brewing Company/K&L Wine Merchants "Obscura Aurantium" Bourbon Barrel Aged Rye Barleywine With Seville Orange Peels, California 750 ml (3 bottle limit per customer)
Like the Kalinda #1 Sour I really gave Brian and the guys at Telegraph free run to do whatever it was that they thought would be interesting and delicious. What they came up with is pretty special. They took their Rhinoceros Rye Barleywine and added Seville Orange peels and let it settle in the Bourbon barrel for a number of months. The beer, while having considerable weight, as a Barleywine should, is surprisingly refreshing. Maybe it is the intense Seville Orange peels that add a vibrant, oily lift to the beer; or maybe it is the Rye based malt that adds layers of spice rather than sweetness but this is surprisingly light on its feet for a 10% beer. The bourbon barrel is persistent throughout the beer adding some boozy rich spice notes in the nose and a spirit-y under currant to the body of the beer and a long finish reminiscent of a hearty Old Fashioned. Plus you get the intense aromatic lift of the Seville Orange peels, which instantly makes the beer feel right for Summer consumption.
