"We gave it this name because in the mouth it has the freshness of a dewdrop at the break of day," says Montirius, the impeccable fifth-generation estate of the Saurel family, a leading producer of Vacqueyras and Gigondas wines in the southern Rhone Valley. Vacqueyras has been called "an up and coming star in the southern Rhone" by Robert Parker, and we recently added the superb, biodynamically farmed wines of Montirius to our Direct Import program to give you a chance to get your hands on these wines. We feel that these wines are a step above in elegance and craft for the price. The rosé, for instance, is made from pressed grapes picked early and especially for making a rosé wine, from a plot that the Saurels believe contains the right indigenous yeast to ferment it naturally. The 2011 "Perle de Rosée" was hailed as "a magnificent rosé, one of the best this year" by Sweden's leading wine magazine, Livets Goda. 13% abv.

Montirius' Perle de Rosée reminds me of a Bandol Rosé; a substantial and serious wine that nonetheless charms the palate with those lovely nunances of sunny south of France fruit. Crushed red berries and mineral nunances make this pink a great vinous choice to pair at your next Provencal inspired meal. Grilled snapper, zucchini and eggplant tian or tuna rillettes with a hunk of baguette work great.
