2011 Pedralonga Albariño Rias Baixas

Miguel Alfonso, proprietor of Pedralonga and member of a long-time, multi-generational family of farmers in the Rias Baixas D.O. of Galicia, is in possession of one of the most unique grape growing sites in the region, indeed in all Spain. On a slope featuring a large granite rock (this is the "pedralonga"), Albariņo grapes grow along with mint, chamomile, wild strawberries and other plants. These grapes are cultivated organically, with some biodynamic practices employed as well, to create a wine that is always one of the most expressive of place, and of vintage, in the region. For those of you used to the more everyday, $12-15 bottlings of branded Albariņo out there (and yes, these can be pretty good)! we encourage you to try this wine. Due to the native yeast fermentation, minimal use of sulfur and most importantly, the beautiful, carefully farmed vines producing these grapes, Pedralonga always is a sea salt tinged, rich textured, yellow fruited gem that perfectly exemplifies what Albariņo is about. Try it with all types of seafood and shellfish; we may not have the variety they have in Galicia, but we assure you that you will be happy with this classic pairing! This is the Albarino with the hunk of rock on the label, for all you visual folks out there. It's a hunk of broken granite, which is part of the soil where the Pedralonga albarino is grown in Rias Biaxas. Lovely, classic aromatics here- white flowers, peach, mineral, saline, with medium plus acidity and an interesting round texture. Organic and partially biodynamic, with no sulphur used in the winemaking process. Simply stunning and delicious.
