(Now sealed with screwcap) Matteo Correggia was a pioneer in helping the Roero gain international recognition when there wasn't much in the way of quality wine being produced. Today, the reputation of the Roero is rooted in much of the early work of Matteo and a few daring other pioneers. Matteo's tragic death in a tractor accident in 2001 rallied many of the region's leading winemakers to help his wife Ornella carry on. After a five year transitional period, Ornella took the helm and has been guiding and expanding the direction of the winery ever since. Correggia produces some stunningly good, powerful reds, distinctive and vibrant whites, and an amazing dry Brachetto.

This is classic, delicious, bright, appley and mineral Arneis. I'd be hard pressed to think of a better Italian white wine aperitivo for the price, at least if you prefer a mineral drenched, drier style of white wine. Delicious on its own, though I bet it would be even more so paired alongside crostini with creamy La Tur cheese. Or, perhaps with some nice, cured anchovies. You'll want to have this around in the summer, Fall, or even in the winter while thinking of summer! In other words, a go to white.

Correggia makes a lovely Arneis that sings of fresh apple fruit with delicate floral and mineral undertones. It is crisp and light on its feet with vibrant acidiy and mineral drive on the finish.Another stunning white wine value for under $20. Try it with a fresh kale salad with apples, feta, and pecans...or light grilled fish or fowl dishes.

Piedmont

- Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
