 *Recommended* This is also notably ripe but there is more elegance as well as more complexity to the earthy mix of red/blue fruit and violet aromas that introduce silky, sweet and seductive middle weight flavors that possess solid but not aggressive structure and excellent length.  Complex notes of chocolate and sweet loam lift this wine's ripe cherry aromas, and also add attractive range and richness to its flavors. It is medium-full in body and carries the coarse edge of youthful tannins, but, given a few years of cellaring, it is likely to emerge with a more approachable texture and become a useful foil to beef roasts and steaks.  The 2004 Pinot Noir 'Eileen Vineyard' comes from the youngest vines (and highest elevation) on the estate, the 8th leaf in this vintage. Dark-ruby in color, it offers a pleasant perfume of toasty red fruits with a touch of earthiness in the backdrop. This leads to a firm wine with layered fruit and moderate tannin. Its appeal is more to the intellect than to the emotions.  (10/ 2007)

Wow! This still has plenty of youth left in it! Catnip, kirsch and new leather all in perfect harmony make for GREAT Oregon Pinot Noir. The 2004 Eileen Vineyard from Cristom is one of the best that I have had from this state. I can't believe how well this has held up in half bottle!

The Eileen Block on the Cristom Estate is their highest elevation vineyard and their youngest Pinot Noir vines. This combination of youthful exuberance and tension from struggle makes for wonderful wines from this parcel. A perfect example of that is from the superb 2004 vintage which is one of the best vintages of the decade for my money in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. A packed and inviting nose of whole cluster spiciness, wet soil, tree bark, tar, cassis, bay leaf and dark centered boysenberry combine give away early on just how complete and complex this wine is. Silky soft on the palate with a sexy mix of sandstone, more cassis, raspberry, black cherry, beet and rhubarb this is a wine that is easy to lose yourself in. Perfect for the dinner table with its overall poise and balance this is a testament to what Cristom is truly trying to accomplish.

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.
