 The deep ruby/plum/purple-tinged 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa offers notes of cassis, blueberries, graphite and toasty vanillin.  Bright ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice, menthol and herbs hint at both syrupy and medicinal elements. Then rather tight in the mouth, with a dusty quality to the rather unyielding raspberry flavor. The granular tannins ultimately parch the palate. Like the Spring Mountain District cabernet, this is carrying a heavy load of oak.  (6/ 2013)

The 2010 vintage was being called Napa's "European Vintage" even before the grapes were picked. This blend of Cabernet from Rutherford and Yountville, with 2% Petit Verdot, ripened during a long, mild growing season punctuated by a heat spike in late August. Bad news for a lot of Zin, but the Cab took it in stride: "This plush, seductive Cabernet features classic Rutherford Bench flavors of black cherry, cassis and ripe plum layered with subtle notes of licorice and mocha," according to winemaker Joel Aiken's notes. "Beautifully balanced, with smooth, well-integrated tannins and wonderful ripeness, the wine drinks beautifully now but will age gracefully for 8-10 years."

When I tasted with the folks from Amici cellars this summer, I was wowed by how well their Cabernets were showing, especially since they're quite young. But I thought the star was their basic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It was exactly what I would expect from well-made, no-expense-spared Napa Cab! Super classic in style, with an ultra-rich color of black and purple fruit and plush weight on the palate, making it feel luxurious but not too over-the-top. Superbly elegant and finessed with integrated tannins and a polished finish. This is drinking great now, but can also cellar for another few years if you like.

A good follow up to one of my favorite 2009 Napa Cabs. This wine shows the cooler vintage but also this time around the fruit comes from the Rutherford and Yountville valley floor vineyards. This gives it a little more supple tannin and generosity. The wine still has the big concentration balanced with freshness that Amici has been doing so well for a few years now. Great Napa Cab at a fraction of the cost some of the big names charge.

Proper Napa Cab. My tasting notes of this read like they were taken right out of what a Rutherford Cab is supposed to taste like; dark blue and black fruits, a dusty earthiness, cassis and sweet oak. This is a very good example of what balanced Cab tastes like, drinkable now, certainly worth drinking over the next 10 years as well.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
