Jacquesson "Cuvée 736" Brut Champagne

SKU #1129263 95 points Antonio Galloni

This bottle was every bit as great as I remembered. Built on a base of 2008, the 736 was brilliant, focused and chiseled from the very first taste. What a wine! (Tasting note, 5/2013: Wonderfully alive and vibrant in the glass, the 736 exudes energy, tension and class, all hallmarks of 2008, the base vintage for this release. Dried pears, crushed flow- ers, anise and mint develop in the glass, but ultimately, the 736 is really a wine of textural elegance and class. With each passing vintage the 700-series wines seem to keep getting better. Simply put, the 736 is one of the top wines in Champagne.) (10/ 2013)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Based on vintage 2008 with 2007 and 2006 (totaling a third) in supporting roles, and 53% Chardonnay; 29% Pinot; 18% Meunier, the Jacquesson NV Extra Brut Cuvee 736 delivers a captivating performance in which prominent acidity, bone-dryness and underlying firmness that in lesser hands or from lesser material would come off as spare and austere, here instead blossom into an irresistibly mouthwatering wealth of scents of flavors. Lemon, grapefruit and white peach tinged with their pits and with pungent yeastiness are further allied with hickory nut bittersweetness, freshly milled cornmeal, mint, chalk, and brine both on the pungent nose and vibrant, gripping palate. Expansive yet productively tense and consummately refreshing, this finishes with cheek-pinching, salivary gland-milking intensity. It should prove rewarding to follow over at least the next 3-5 years, as well as from any subsequent disgorgements. (11/ 2013)

(66% from the 2008 vintage and the balance reserve wines; 53% chardonnay, 29% pinot noir and 18% pinot meunier; disgorged December, 2012): Bright straw-yellow. Intense aromas of nectarine, pear skin, chamomile and toasty lees are enlivened by bitter citrus zest and mineral elements. Dense, seamless and powerful, with fresh pit fruit and candied orange flavors complicated by notes of anise and buttered toast. The mineral nuance comes back strong on the finish, which features a suave, expansive floral quality. This wine got a very low dosage of 1.5 grams per liter. (12/ 2013)

91 points Wine Spectator

Fresh and slightly austere in style, yet gains flesh from hints of biscuit and almond paste, complemented by persimmon, candied lemon zest and currant notes. Offers a juicy finish, with a hint of smoke. Disgorged October 2012. Drink now through 2018. 650 cases imported. (10/ 2013)

K&L Notes

This great house is leading the way for transparency in the Champagne world with batch numbered non-vintage, and a great fact filled back label. The 736 is based on the 2008 harvest with reserves from 2007 and 2006 and composed of 53% Chardonnay, 29% Pinot Noir and 18% Meunier. This year they thought the wine tasted the best at just 1.5 grams per liter of dosage and so it is an extra brut. It has a great pale straw color and a serious creamy, sweet hazelnut, fresh baked baguette nose. On the palate it is super expressive detailed Champagne with great minerality. It is super dry but in no way austere--what a super bottle! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

I am a huge fan of Jacquesson and this latest release is another stellar one. Based on the 2008 vintage, this release was aged in neutral oak for three years prior to bottling. Pear, green apples, white pepper and strong (not overpowering!) acidity. Excellent!

The Jacquesson Cuvee 736 might be the most pure Champagne that we stock. It is only dosed at 1.5g/l and is very, very dry, with excellent white fruit aromas and flavors. It was a fantastic contrast to the fat, toasty styles that we tasted so many of during our big Champagne team meeting. It does need food, and I would pick this out as being an exceptionally good partner to oysters or other shellfish.
