2012 Certan de May, Pomerol (Pre-Arrival)
This is a very firm and concentrated wine with dark and smoky character. The palate is elegant and fine, but densely structured with dark tannins that give extra complexity.
This has lovely singed vanilla, black tea and sandalwood aromas mingling together, with subtle plum sauce, steeped cherry and red currant fruit hanging in reserve. Graceful and perfumy overall, but with solid latent depth on the finish. Should expand a bit more during the élevage.
An attractive sample with lovely floral and berry character. Citrus acidity. Medium-to-full body. The wine builds on the palate with very polished tannins. Delicately fruity with pretty depth.

Round and easygoing with sweet tannin and early accessibility, the precociously formed 2012 Certan de May exhibits notes of bay leaves, black currants, black cherries and underbrush. Ripe and medium-bodied, it is made somewhat in the style of Latour a Pomerol, but slightly more herbaceous. I liked it for its depth, richness and early drinkability. Consume it over the next 10-12+ years.

Good full ruby. Expressive aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant, mocha and sweet spices. Dense, supple and suave, with sweet, deep, fleshy flavors of plum and mocha supported by a firm acid spine Finishes very long and refined, with polished tannins for the year. This struck me as a lot less heavily extracted than past versions. Superb wine in the making.
As Robert Parker puts it, Certan de May is a "tiny gem of a vineyard." Even though it is not classified, its 5 hectares are prominently located opposite Vieux Chateau Certan (they were once one property), and you can certainly see why it can produce such potentially fantastic wines. The vineyards are planted to 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
