100% Macabeo from 60 year old vines in the Agly valley discovered and nurtured by Paul Old and Hugo Stewart, founders of boutique Les Clos Perdus in the village of Peyriac de Mer, in the Languedoc region in the South of France. This was fermented half in stainless steel and half in wood to yeild a wine that balances brightness and complexity--ideal for enjoying with food--and a distinctive, textured finish. 13.5% abv.

I am a keen fan of whites with a healthy dose of acidicy, and for this reason Le Blanc is one of my current favorites. Although it hails from the sunny south of France - more specifically the Roussillon, it is composed of 100% macabeo. Known more famously as viura in spain, this varietal finds its way into many a rioja blanco and cava too. I love the delicate almond and floral notes that Les Clos Perdus manages to elicit with this unassuming country white. Try it with a hearty bowl of chicken pozole or pan roasted cod and tapenade.
