SKU #1125940 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2012 Secateurs Chenin Blanc has a light but pure bouquet with lemon peel, grapefruit and hints of wet wool. The palate is crisp and vibrant on the entry with touches of lanolin and litchi nuts. This is so well balanced – uncomplicated but delicious. Drink now. (12/ 2012)

90 points Wine Spectator

Bright and engaging, with lots of white peach, Jonagold apple and Cavaillon melon notes offset by a bright floral edge. The pure, unadorned finish sails on. Drink now. 15,000 cases made.—J.M. (6/ 2013)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Bright, light yellow. Peachy fruit salad and spice aromas are enlivened by grapefruit pith. Rich and silky, with a slightly sweet impression nicely countered by harmonious acidity. Round and fairly full in the mouth and still a bit youthfully aggressive. Finishes nicely dry, with hints of ripe stone fruits and quince. (6/ 2013)

K&L Notes

This magnificent wine is sourced from 50+ year old Chenin Blanc bush vines that are dry farmed, very low yielding and that transfer fantastic minerality to the wine. It was fermented in a combination of concrete tanks and old french oak barrels for added texture and palate weight. Winemaker Adi Badenhorst is a very charismatic guy who, alongside Eben Sadie, has put Swartland on the map. Outspoken, opinionated and talented, his charisma rubs off upon the wines he creates. Moreover, they are available at extremely affordable prices and serve as a perfect introduction to the delights of Adi’s and Swartland's wines. Recently highly reccomended in the SF Chronicle's feature on South African white wines: "This is Badenhorst's mid-tier wine, in this case Chenin from 1960s-era head-trained vines on granite, planted at the family farm near Paardeberg. Like great dry Muscadet, it outpaces the grape's reputation, showing a stark mineral presence, and then sasparilla, resin and a remarkable depth of citrus fruit."

I can't think of a single white wine in the store offering so much for so little money. The Secateurs Chenin Blanc from A A Badenhorst reminds me of the old vine Chenin Blanc of days gone past from Chalone. It has a solid medium body, great melon like aromas and flavors and plenty of refreshing acid on its long finish. This has enough in the middle for fans of Chardonnay, and enough intrigue for the most jaded wine fan. All of this for such a great price!!!

Lovely pure, balanced and immensely drinkable Chenin Blanc. This wine is such great value. It is entirely hand picked from 50+ year old bush vines in Swartland on South Africa's west coast. The fruit is gently pressed and fermented in a combination of tank and neutral french oak. The wine is driven by soft stone fruit flavors of ripe peach and yellow plum. Minerality coming from the deeply rooted old vines in decomposed granite soils adds another layer of intrigue. This wine is so supple and expressive, just a joy to drink.

This is a great value, and a wonderful introduction to South African Chenin Blanc. The fruit comes from bushvines planted in the 1960's and a some amount sees a little time in neutral oak for texture. The nose has notes of jasmine flower, honeysuckle, apricot, kumquat and honey. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with a round creamy texture and moderate "lemony" acidity that has a persistent finsih.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Chenin Blanc

- Also called Pineau de la Loire and Pineau d'Anjou. Chenin Blanc is an expressive white French varietal that makes beautiful dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Traditionally grown in the Loire Valley, the wines made from this varietal are typically labeled geographically. Vouvray Chenins are traditionally medium-sweet; Savennières Chenins are typically bright and crisp; Coteaux du Layon Chenins like Bonezeaux and Quarts de Chaume are among the world's most sought-after sweet wines, and the sparkling Chenins of Saumur are perfumed and delicious. What all of these iterations of the grape have in common is their ability to age, a gift bestowed upon them because of the grape's naturally high-acidity.
Country:

South Africa

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Click for a list of bestselling items from South Africa.
