2004 Pierre Moncuit "Cuvée Nicole Moncuit Vieilles Vignes" Grand Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

SKU #1125452 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

92+ points. All the best elements of the Moncuit house style and this important Chardonnay vintage come through in the 2004 Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvee Nicole Moncuit Vieilles Vignes. Hints of pear, white peaches, spices and dried flowers are woven together beautifully. The 2004 is rich, resonant and deeply expressive of these 90-100 year vines. A creamy, textured finish balances the wine’s inherent tension nicely. This is a great showing from Moncuit. Dosage was 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Moncuit is a consistently reliable producer. With the exception of the Hugues de Coulmet, all of the wines are made from vineyards in Mesnil and offer tons of village character at prices that remain fair and accessible. (11/ 2012)

Champagne doesn’t get better than this- I could not believe how much class this 2004 had, even though I have been lucky enough to have many, many past vintages of this cuvee. If you are interested in this great Champagne, do not wait to act as I only have three cases statewide. This great bottle of Mesnil Grand Cru is made from two over 90 year old plots, some of the oldest vines in all of Champagne. The nose is restrained, detailed and multifaceted: I found perfect baguette, savory spice and fresh pineapple in the bouquet. On the palate it had both the lush richness of ancient vines and the fabulous mineral focus of some of the best chalk vineyard in all of Champagne. This wine sings with both ripe fruit and mineral freshness… Too bad there is so little!

I couldn't go home without a bottle after tasting this spectacular Champagne. Opulent but with spectacular verve, fine focus and a rich creamy middle, Ripe pears, delicate spices and orange blossoms linger on the nose and through the palate. All the characteristics of Mesnil from amazingly old vines and half the price of the most famous Mesnil Champagnes - and a very strong competitor to them.

Varietal:

Chardonnay

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.
