2010 "Rufo" do Vale D. Maria Douro

SKU #1125226 Jancis Robinson

The Wine Society tasting note says it all: 'Fresh tasting, mineral, and fragrant.' Actually manages to be quite lifted and lively. No heat. No raisined-fruit notes. Really very good value. (4/ 2013)

Wine Spectator

Snappy fruit flavors of dried strawberry, cherry and dark currant feature well-concentrated pepper and spice notes. Offers dark chocolate on the finish, with licorice notes. Drink now through 2015. (4/ 2013)

K&L Notes

This is a very polished, elegant Douro wine at any price, let alone something coming in under $15! Composed of de-classified fruit from the pricier CV and Quinta cuvees, the grapes are foot trodden in lagares and the aged in one to three year-old French oak barrels. There is nice structure here (no surprise for a Douro wine from the excellent 2010 vintage) as well as lovely freshness to the curranty dark fruit. A very strong effort from one of the "Douro boys" and leading producers in this region. (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese and Spanish wine buyer) Touriga Franca (60%) and Touriga Nacional (40%)

Portugal

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
