*Editors' Choice* A glorious, grapefruity, lusciously fresh Pinot Gris, this new vintage from Seven Hills is made for a summer afternoon. This has notes of citrus and melon, with highlights of mint and a hint of pepper, keeping it lively and interesting all through the refreshing finish. (10/ 2012)

K&L Notes

Although Seven Hills labels it as an "Oregon" Pinot Gris, this is not a cross-region bulk blend. This bottling is entirely sourced from the Melrose Vineyard in the Umpqua Valley, which was established as an AVA the same year as the Willamette Valley. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and then briefly aged in 10% new French oak to impart complexity and texture. From winemaker Casey McClellan: "The wine is light straw-gold in color with aromas of ripe citrus, spearmint, pear and fresh hazelnut. There’s an enticing streak of vanillin from the oak. The wine is dry, but has a bright, sweet citrus palate made more interesting by a hint of spearmint by mouth. The finish is clean, brisk and fruitful."

A winery with tremendous consistency and high quality for the price. The Pinot Grigio is bright and fresh with great layers of flavor. Cinnamon, apple, vanilla and just a touch of cedar give this wine a amazing depth to go along with a refreshing acidity. It is definitely richer than it's cousins from the north, this is fruit from Southern Oregon, but still a perfect spring sipper.Enjoy with many seafood and Pork dishes.

Seven Hills has long been one of favorite Washington producers here at K&L and one of my personal faves for about as long as I’ve been in this business. This first generation Washington winery has made great wines, seemingly continuously, since its founding in 1988 in all price points and from all varietals. A perfect example of one of their tremendous values is the 2011 Pinot Gris. Sourced from a single vineyard in the Umpqua Valley in Southern Oregon this 100% Pinot Gris is effusively aromatic with layers of cinnamon spiced applesauce and vanilla bean from a kiss of new French oak yet still has plenty of bright lychee and Granny Smith apple fruit to make it feel far from bulky. While this comes in broad and rich it still has a wonderful counter balance of streaky Asian pear, spiced apple and passion fruit that lead into more crisp and focused flavors towards the finish. I would never put this in the category of a big wine but if you want a little more richness, and complexity, in your Pinot Gris or are just tired of Chardonnay this is a fantastic substitute. If you are thinking Spring, patios, seasonal veggies and fresh seafood you are certainly on the right track with this wine!

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gewürztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.

- Highly touted for its Pinot Noirs, Oregon is part of the up-and-coming winemaking industry in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Most of Oregon is directly affected by the climate coming off of the Pacific Ocean, giving it mild winters and wet summers. This makes it a difficult place to ripen grapes, but some say that the harder grapes have to struggle, the more complex they will turn out to be.
