2008 Luis Pato Vinho Tinto Beiras

SKU #1124644

Produced from Baga and Touriga Nacional grapes from different vineyards in Bairrada, just south of the mountains separating this region from Oporto. This wine is loaded with character and offers terrific value as well as some really distinctive, specific flavors .The Bairrada region (Pato labels his wine "Beiras" as an act of rebellion against the Bairrada DO's bureaucracy), is cool, and the climate Atlantic influenced. Soils are composed of clay with limestone interspersed. There is an acidity and tannic structure that is quite different from Bairrada's more famous, warmer northerly neighbor, the Douro, and its richer, riper wines. Luis Pato is making some of the most interesting wines on the Iberian peninsula, including this wonderful, affordably priced example of his beloved Baga varietal. Very intense, cherry aromas, lead to more of the same on the palate: cherries, pits, skins and all. If this is a bit rustic, it's an an endearing way. There is some real minerality and interesting stuff going on in this wine produced from one of the most exciting, up and coming portuguese grape varieties. Highly recommended! The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region.
