1999 (SOLD OUT) Karuizawa K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Japanese Single Malt Whisky 750ml (w/NOH label) (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1124621

Karuizawa Whisky is the holy grail of Japanese Single Malt. It has never before been released in the United States. K&L is incredibly lucky to offer you the first two casks to ever be imported. Not only are we the first to ever sell this whisky in the United States, but we've managed to do so well below international prices. Here we have a single cask distilled in 1999 and from a first fill sherry butt. The color is dark mahogany. The nose is the wonderful savory sherry thing that you sometimes get. Extremely rare and extremely delicious. It's as if you've poured a demi-glace over a pile of dried fruit. On the side, you've got a really delicious espresso that's just been served. What a symphony of flavors! I'm shocked at how balanced this is at cask strength. The palate is fully of sandalwood and spice. With water this thing goes a whole new direction. Citrus peel, earthy clay, tar, and some of that wonderful kind of camphor smoke (not all sulfury flavors are unpleasant). The finish is dry and long. The exotic wood is back in full force with subtle hints of fennel and fresh soil. I'm just embarrassed by how delicious this whisky is. There's simply too much going on to post full notes here, but know that this whisky simply brings it. (David Othenin-Girard)

This whisky is simply amazing. Think Glendronach or sherry-aged Springbank as a comparison. I have to admit that I wasn't really in tune with the Japanese whiskey market until 2010 when the discussion for these casks actually began. I had no idea how legendary Karuizawa was within the small community that coveted Japanese malts. Two years later, we've finally jumped through all the hoops necessary to get these barrels to the U.S. Rich, supple, complex, chewy, oily, loaded with punch - this is a whisky everyone should try even if you don't know the history. The story about a distillery that will never operate again. The fact that this is the "Pappy Van Winkle" of single malt whisky. I know grown men who will likely cry when they get their bottle. That's pretty cool. If we could buy 10,000 bottles of this whiskey, we would. Unfortunately there will be only 500 lucky people. Destined to be one of the great whiskies we've ever sold. There's no amount of build-up that can do the 99 Karuizawa justice. Just get one and be happy you had the chance. We all are!

I opened the Karuizawa 13 this evening. I'm not sure how to put it into words but I'll try. The nose is the most compelling aroma I've ever smelled in a whiskey. This going to sound crazy but right up front is BBQ, beef bouillon, dark dark fruits, wisps of smoke.....holy cow this is a crazy nose. I can't stop nosing the glass.........

The entry is a powerful, big meaty profile, some heat, sherry is there but in a dark aged way.....coats the tongue is a big way....finish is so long......bitter chocolate on the finish but some sweet sherry notes hanging around.

I would say this is the Mephistopheles beer of whiskey.....big, bold, chewy, complex with so many flavors dancing in and out....it's a crazy whiskey. At only 13 years old....its so so good. This is going to be fun to try over and over.
