 Pale ruby-purple in color, the 2011 Denton Vineyard Pinot Noir opens with a wonderfully perfumed nose lifted with aromas of red fruits, roses, some dried herbs plus a little note of bark and pepper. The medium-bodied frame with medium levels of grainy tannins and zesty acid supports very good fruit concentration and a long finish with a slight herbal lift at the end. Drink it now to 2017+.

From the Winemaker: "Light purple, red. On the nose a fragrant raspberry and red fruit opening followed by black cherry, leaf litter and brown spices. The palate is both fruit-rich and structured showing sweet black fruit, toast, pomegranate, currants but also an underlying game-meat character and stalky thread.

The wines we have just brought in from Oakridge have shown across the board to be truely exceptional. The "Denton" Pinot Noir has aromas of bright, crunchy raspberry and cherry fruit with a light floral rose petalnote and spicy clove and sandlewood accents. On the palate, the wine is elegant with a lacy, ethereal texture and seamless balance. This is a wine with purity,clarity and definition that rewards with a persistent long finish.

This wine is lovely. That's the best word to describe it. There's a lovely core of soft red fruit, a lovely burst of baking spices, a lovely hint of tangy acidity at the back, and a lovely finish that sings of ripe raspberry. My new favorite pinot noir for the money. Oakridge wines are legit.

When we tasted the fantastic line up from Oakridge yesterday in the staff tasting, my notebook was overflowing with superlatives. My favorite wine of the whole lot was this Denton Vineyard Pinot Noir from Yarra Valley. Not only did this fabulous wine break every stereotype of Australian red, it also offered a unique take on this most delicate of red wine grape varieties. This subtle, understated Pinot has a gorgeous ruby red color and is full of raspberry fruit on the nose. In the mouth it is very clean and light without sacrificing sweet Pinot character. The finish is as dry as a rich Burgundy and the wine has plenty of acid. I can't wait to try and fool Cinnamon with this next Sunday... I'll pair it with a roast chicken!

Elegant, medium bodied, bright Pinot. Lovely aromas of dusty red berries, leaf litter, dry bark and spicy wood notes. The palate echoes the aromatics with nice purity and savory undertones. Not a big blockbuster style, but one that uses subtlety, balance and poise to communicate the true beauty of Pinot Noir. Perfect for light game, pork,chicken,grilled fish.

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great Region are in the southeastern area of the continent, with the Barossa Valley, Claire Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia, the Yarra Yarra Velley and Pyrenees in Victoria and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales.
