The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is full of freshly cut flowers, violets, menthol crushed rocks and dark red cherries. There is a level of freshness and pure vibrancy in the 2010 that previous vintages don't have, most likely the result of the long, cool growing season. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is first-class. Nothing is out of place. In short, the 2010 Estate is gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. Round Pond is a fairly young estate. The MacDonnell family has been selling fruit from their vineyards in Rutherford to other wineries for years, but only began making their own wines with the 2002 vintage. All of the wines I tasted were beautiful and promising, except for the 2009 Bovet, which was corked. I hope to be able to taste that wine again soon. Thomas Rivers Brown is the consulting oenologist to Round Pond's internal winemaking team. The Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is particularly of note considering its very reasonable price and a production of several thousand cases per year. (12/ 2012)
Special March Only New Release Price! This new release from Round Pond is one of the best the winery has done to date! This bottling is a selection of small lots from twenty select vineyard parcels over their 350+ acre, sustainably farmed Rutherford estate. The wine spent 19 months in 70% new French oak. From the winery: "The nose on this vintage shows intensity with a dark fruit profile compared to typical Rutherford cabs. Initial top notes of brandied cherries, blueberry syrup and ripe brambly blackberry bushes are accented by tobacco leaf, cardamom and a hint of anise. As it presents, the palate burgeons in the mouth; starting compact and dense upfront it expands fully from front to back with a finish that lingers over a minute. It boasts a plush mouth feel that is soft on entry, framed by well structured tannins, a balanced acid profile and medium body. Flavors of espresso bean, pot de crème and frangellico give the impression of sweetness."
