This exciting Pinot Noir comes from the picturesque village of Monthelie, located next to the more famous village of Volnay. It is from a tiny negociant in Puligny-Montrachet named Jacques Bavard. He comes from a long line of wine-growers, and is dedicated to working with organic and biodynamic growers. This comes from 30-year-old vines, and underwent a long cold soak to extract more aromatic elements. It is bigger and richer than the Auxey Duresses on the palate, with lovely cherry fruit and quite a bit of structure to match it is aromatically charming, with that wonderful note of wild strawberries (Fraises des Bois in French). When Keith Wollenberg, our Burgundy buyer, characterizes Monthelie as “damn close to Volnay”, he is describing both its geographic position and its flavor profile. Monthelie shares with its more famous neighbor delightful floral notes and a distinctive red-fruited character usually described as “wild strawberries”. Classically Burgundian in expression, this 2010 Monthelie Rouge from Jacques Bavard offers extraordinary value for money in a Pinot Noir that can be enjoyed tonight or over the next few years.

Very nice Burgundy offering lot's of classic dark cherries/strawberries along with the tell tale minerality of Burgundy. A great value!

Easily in the top five DI burgundy producers in the store, Jacques Bavard comes through with another great set of wines. The 2010 Monthelie Rouge has quite the expressive nose of rich cherry and strawberry fruit. Bright, red fruit with beautiful texture and depth on the palate. Drink now and stash a couple bottles in the cellar for a few years for a truly rewarding experience down the road.

Another stunning wine from Jacques Bavard. This guy is becoming one of my favorite Direct Imports we have. All his wines have such a purity and drive. The Monthelie Rouge is like a slightly darker fruited version of great Volnay. The aromatics are bright and fresh. On the palate it has a little more density and deeper tinges than its classically red fruited neighbor. This wine has really energy and vibrancy that I can only attribute to the fact that Bavard carefully selects Biodynamic growers for his wines.

At this price I grabbed some quickly - get yours before it sells out. Montelie at its finest - absolutely pure wild strawberry/cherry fruit with classic minerals and a hint of spice. This is on the rich side of medium bodied and a great way to pump up your cellar with some 2010 Burgundy that is solid as they come. The combination of elegance and substance is really charming.

Last year I bought two cases of 750's of the 2009 vintage Jacques Bavard Monthelie Rouge and one case of magnums. Now that I have tasted the 2010, I have to figure out how I am going to fit this equally great vintage in my cellar! The fruit is so pure in this expressive, Volnay like Burgundy that it reminds me of Lafon. The ripe black cherry fruit reminded me of the great Bing cherry ice cream at Swenson’s. The Bavard also has velvet like texture, and a hint of savor on the palate. This is a steal!

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.

- The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Côte d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Côte de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Côte de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). - Sometimes known as the Chambolle Musigny of the Côte de Beaune, Volnay is famous for its silky, elegant wines with finesse, delicacy and an almost ethereal nose. However, the wines have a depth and structure that can allow them to age for decades. Remington Norman said it wonderfully in his book The Great Domaines of Burgundy: 'If the wines of Pommard sometimes seem like a truck-driver's interpretation of Pinot, then those of Volnay are a ballerina's.
