 Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2010 Syrah gives pronounced black cherry, black berry and blueberry notes on the notes with touches of black pepper and dried herbs. Light to medium bodied, it has a taut, tightly knit palate of youthful black berry and herbal flavors with a crisp acid line and low to medium level of chewy tannins, finishing long and peppery. Drink it now to 2017+. Owned by winemakers Anna and Jason Flowerday, Te Whare Ra (TWR) is a small vineyard / winery located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick. The 11 hectare vineyard is planted to 7 different varieties and was first established in 1979. The vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices and both winery and vineyard are both fully certified organic with BioGro NZ. The Chardonnay and Riesling “D” (dry) are particularly exciting, though the Pinot Noir has a lot of character and potential too. (LPB)  (10/ 2012)

94 points Sam Kim Wine Orbit: "Marlborough is not famous for syrah, but Te Whare Ra's syrah should become renowned and celebrated for its consistency and excellence. This is cool-climate syrah at its best, exhibiting pristine aromas of blueberry, dark cherry and floral combined with subtle spice. The palate is focused and finely textured with outstanding concentration, leading to an extremely long silky finish. The wine is beautifully ripe and juicy, and will develop greater richness and complexity with time." Jason and Anna Flowerday are the Husband and Wife winemaking team behind TWR. All of their wines are hand-crafted with love and attention. Only 140 cases of the 2010 Syrah was produced. The fruit is from seven different clones of Syrah planted in TWR's Home Block Vineyard. The fruit is grown organic and biodynamically. Fruit is entirely hand picked, sorted by the cluster, gently de-stemmed and then re-sorted by the individual berry! This wine is quintessential ultra-cool climate Syrah. Bright violet floral notes, crushed berries and ground black pepper. The palate is silky and dynamic but with sneaky underlying long-chain tannins. Dark red fruited with exotic spices and some subtle savory notes of crushed herbs. The wine has Great length on the palate and is incredibly food friendly. Treat this like a northern Rhone Syrah as regards to food pairing and you will not be disappointed. A tiny production wine that we are delighted to put on the shelf.

Unbelievably good Syrah. Marlborough is definitely a very marginal place to grow Syrah. Most people wouldn't bother with it as it's way to late ripening for a place as cool as this. However, when you just happen to have some amazing old vines in the heart of Renwick and you are passionate about making interesting wines that speak of terroir, purity and elegance then you might just go the extra mile to make a wine like this!

Elegance is a word rarely associated with new world Syrah, but for me this Te Whare Ra is the most elegant example of this variety in our stock. K&L's Ryan Woodhouse has done a lot to change the way I think of wines from here, Australia and South Africa, and this 2010 Syrah from Marlborough is completely different from the thick inky monsters that I expect from anywhere outside of the Northern Rhone. It is clean, minty and balanced, and I can't wait to get it home and try it with some lamb chops on the grill. The most impressive thing about the wine is the finish- this is long, mineral driven stuff. Try it out!

A serious Syrah, this release of the TWR is very spicy, full of mixed peppercorns and purple fruit. Hints of green cardamom as well which bringsthe northern Rhone to mind. Very good style Syrah, slightly reserved and decidedly not a richer, jammier take on this grape variety.

Shiraz/Syrah

- One of France's noblest black grape varieties, Syrah is known for its intense and distinctive perfume reminiscent of briar fruit, tar, spice and black pepper and its firm structure. One of few black grape varietals frequently vinified on its own, the best examples of Syrah come from the Northern Rhône, particularly Hermitage, but also Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph. These wines are very astringent in their youth, though some Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph can be enjoyed young, relatively speaking. Given the requisite patience, though, these wines can reveal amazing complexity and secondary fruit characteristics like plum and blackcurrant as well as subtle hints of smoke and flowers. In the Southern Rhône, Syrah is used to add structure and complexity to wines dominated by Grenache and complemented by Mourvèdre, like the more immediately drinkable Côte du Rhônes, as well as the long-lived wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In recent years, plantings of Syrah have spread throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon where it is produced on its own or blended with other varietals. Outside of France, the most important Syrah growing country is easily Australia, where it is called Shiraz. Quality levels here depend greatly on yields and geography, and the wines range from bold, fruity and easy-drinking to intense and ageable, like the famed Penfolds Grange. Often bottled on its own, in Australia Syrah is also can be blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre, as in the Southern Rhône, and is increasingly combined with Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah has also been steadily increasing in popularity in California, thanks to a group of advocates called the Rhône Rangers. Its most successful iterations come from the Central and Sonoma Coasts, where winemakers are pushing boundaries and creating some incredible wines. In recent years Syrah has also found a number of proponents in Washington State, which is definitely a region to watch for this variety.

New Zealand

- New Zealand is an extremely diverse wine-growing nation. The long history of producing wine started in the 1830s with wineries such as Mission Estate (1850) and Te Mata Estate (1896) still producing wine today. The two islands hold a multitude of different growing climates ranging from warmer areas such as Hawke’s Bay to very cool regions such as Waitaki, and Awatere. Most regions are defined as Maritime with the exception being Central Otago that has a moderate Continental climate with the high elevation creating dramatic diurnal swings in temperature. The plethora of grapes grown in New Zealand reflects this diverse microclimate make up. Everything has a place here, Bordeaux varietals and Syrah in Hawke’s Bay, Chardonnay and Pinot in Nelson, Pinot Noir and Riesling in Central Otago , aromatic whites in Waipara and pretty much everything you can imagine in Marlborough. New Zealand is also one of the “greenest” wine producing nations on earth (94% of wine certified sustainable in 2013) with a strong focus on organic and Biodynamic farming.
