Personally, I have been a real sucker for the 2009 vintage. I think the wines have class, elegance and a soft spoken drive and von Hovel, in typical fashion, delivers this to you in the bottle. Very clear and focused with edgy minerals, bright tropical fruit and white peaches. Showing just a hint of the 2009 fleshiness but that magical Saar zip really brightens up the entire wine from beginning to end. This still has a long life a head of it. Buy this wine. If you are a fan of classically styled Riesling, with bright acidity and steely minerality, then this is a no brainer. If you are simply a fan of delicious white wine, then I repeat - no brainer. I am not simply saying this because German buyer Eric Story is sitting one workstation to my right. Honest. I plan on buying at least a case of this delicious Riesling. Clean, steely Saar Riesling from a great producer for $12.99 - 'nuff said. Do it.

This is delicious Kabinett, and shows the peachy, open knit fruit of a ripe vintage in the Saar. Underneath the pretty aromatics and the clean fruit is a tremendous amount of minerality and drive. The Saar, which is cold enough still to write off a vintage or two every decade, is definitely the right spot for a ripe vintage like 2009! The finish goes on forever with this Von Hovel and I promise you will be amazed at the value!

The richness of the 2009 vintage in Germany shows in this lovely Kabinett from Von Hovel- however, the acidity is perfect and the wine is balanced and delightfully quaffable. Stone fruit, green apple, citrus and zippy minerality with medium-plus acidity and a long finish, and just 8.5% abv. At $12.99, it would do to snap up as much of this as you can. Great for entertaining- it would be nice as an aperitif wine with nibbly bits like cheese, nuts & olives, with fish, chicken, spicy Thai or Indian food- or even on a warm spring evening by itself!

Riesling

- While the rest of the world has often misappropriated the name--Welchriesling, Riesling Italico, Gray Riesling and Emerald Riesling are all names applied to varieties that are NOT Riesling--this exceptional German varietal has managed to maintain its identity. Perhaps its biggest claims to fame are its intoxicating perfume, often described as having honeyed stone fruit, herb, apple and citrus notes, and its incredible longevity - the wines lasting for decades. Aged Rieslings often take on a distinctive and alluring Petrol-like aroma. Within Germany, the grape seems to do best in the warming slate soils of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Other German regions that turn out great Rieslings include Pfalz, Rheingau and Nahe. German Rieslings are made in a range of ripeness levels. The top wines are assigned Prädikat levels to describe their ripeness at harvest. These are: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling has also achieved acclaim in France's Alsace, the only region in that country where the grape is officially permitted. Alsatian Rieslings are typically dry and wonderfully aromatic. Austrian Riesling is also steadily gaining praise and fine Riesling is also produced in Italy's Alto-Adige and Friuli, in Slovenia and much of Central and Eastern Europe. In the New World its stronghold is Australia, where it does best in the Eden and Clare Valleys. It is also planted in smaller amounts in New Zealand. In the US, winemakers are eschewing the syrupy sweet versions of the 1970s and 1980s, instead making elegant and balanced wines in both California and Washington State.
