2012 Palmina Santa Barbara County Pinot Grigio

Palmina's latest Pinot Grigio bottling is a snapshot of the fine 2012 vintage in Santa Barbara county. It is comprised of grapes from the Sierra Madre Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, Alisos Vineyard in the Los Alamos Valley, the Honea Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley and the tiny Hibbits Ranch in the Sta. Rita Hills. The grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel in separate lots with the malolactic fermentation surpressed. From the winery: "Pale, pale gold in color, 2012 Pinot Grigio is crystal clear and brilliant in nature. A bouquet of citrus peel, wild arugula and honeysuckle tease the senses. A sip astonishes with crisp and refreshing acidity delivering white peach, Bosc pear and Fuyu persimmon flavors, all mingling with a stony, flinty character. Beautifully balanced, the wine lingers on the palate with nuances of nectarine and almond. This is a firm, focused wine with a beautifully dry finish that acts as its own worldwide ambassador for the perfect Pinot Grigio climate and soils of Santa Barbara County."

All stainless steel, cold fermented, inoculated with Epernnay yeast. Citrus and zesty acidity show up front, with melon and toast adding to the texture. With plenty of grip, this is a serious, American take on a traditional Italian varietal.

Winemaker Steve Clifton has created a really special Pinot Grigio with the 2012 vintage. All stainless steel, with a cold ferment using only Epernay yeast, and unusual use of lees stirring lends a baked bread character to this lovely wine. Lime zest, toast, citrus, mineral with medium plus acidity and a surprising richness. Not your Grandma's Pinot Grigio!Gorgeous.

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gewürztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.

As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
