2009 Two Sisters "Courtney's Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay (Elsewhere $40)
*Two Stars* Well-defined, ripe-apple fruit serves as a strong foundation to this outgoing wine while hints of honey, caramel and the bakery shop smells of fresh pastry provide nuances of richness. A nicely crafted and very generous wine of exemplary balance, it builds and builds en route to a flavorful, long-lasting finish. It is enjoyable now, but it has the structure and depth to make for easy predictions that it will improve in the bottle for another three to five years.
There’s a bright, brisk vein of acidity in this dry wine, which stimulates the palate and gets the tastebuds watering. The true flavors sink into the middle palate, suggesting grilled pineapple, tangerine jam and buttered toast. A firm minerality grounds and braces the richness. Don’t drink this Chardonnay too cold.
Two Sisters is a project of Foley Estates in the Santa Rita Hills appelation of Santa Barbara County. The Chardonnay is selected from the best blocks of Courtney's Vineyard on Foley's Rancho Las Hermanas property. The vineyard blocks are planted with the heirloom Villa Mt. Eden Chardonnay clone, which is known for its bright citrus and orchard fruit profile and ability to express minerality.
