2011 Shenandoah Vineyards "Special Reserve" Zinfandel

Located in Amador County, Shenandoah Vineyards blended this 2011 Zinfandel with 3% Syrah and 2% Grenache. The wine was aged for 9 months in seasoned barriques before bottling. Bright structure with moderate tannins and full flavors of blackberry, cherry, and cocoa powder fill out the profile of this very food friendly wine. Shenandoah utilizes sustainable growing and winemaking practices to deliver this excellent value.

Perhaps my favorite $10 wine of all time. This Zin is everything I want from a 10 dollar bottle, rich fruit, a touch of structure, and just plain yummyness. Juicy and fresh, I have 3 bottles on hand at all time, just as a rule of thumb. Truly delicious.

Another worthy offering from Shenandoah Vineyards. How they keep knocking out wines of this quality for $9.99 is beyond me, but hey we'll take them! This wine has a touch more body and density than the last vintage that was more crunchy berry fruits. This vintage has a bigger, richer, fuller bodied feel. It's still balanced and now probably even more suited BBQing all summer long. Great for burgers and ribs.

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.

- This sweeping inland territory (an AVA on its own right), encompassing El Dorado, Fiddletown, Shenandoah and Amador, has been on the grape-growing map since the Gold Rush. With the exception of high-altitude El Dorado, the vineyards here are sun-baked and hot—in other words, best suited to old-vine zinfandel, petit sirah and Rhône varietals. The cooler climes of El Dorado are ideal for cabernet, chardonnay and merlot.
